Normal chin is in equilibrium relative to forehead and nose. The aesthetic of the face requires every part to be in harmony with the others. So a chin which is very small (retired, microgenia) diverts from other normal features. A small chin can give the appearance that the nose is too big and commonly patients will have a Rhinoplasty to reduce the nose when Chin Augmentation would have been more suitable to restore the balance of the face. This imbalance may have significant implications for the patient's psychological well-being. Patients can have poor self-esteem and withdraw. Chin augmentation, Chin Implant Surgery to improve (increase) the chin is intended to restore balance and provide a natural aesthetic appearance.

Why chin augmentation?

Improving facial balance is generally achieved by enhancing the chin by means of an implant inserted into the mouth. The goal is to provide an adequate projection of the chin as well as the correct height of the chin that is balanced with other facial features. Optimal balance is determined by the proportions of the upper, middle and lower face, which is unique to both men and women.

  • Reduce the size of a patient's chin that feels and has a greater than normal chin.

  • Enhance facial balance with forehead, nose and chin.

  • Improve self-confidence, particularly for patients with small chin compared to other facial features.

  • Chin enhancement is done to reshape the chin, elevate prominence and obtain a natural aesthetic appearance

Who is ideal for surgery

The ideal patients for chin augmentation are those with a weak or receding chin (microgenicity), but with a normal dental bite.

Procedure of the surgery

  • Chin enhancement Surgery with a chin implant, is performed under general anaesthesia, commonly as a daytime procedure.

  • An icision is done in the lower gum of the lip and is therefore concealed inside the mouth. The incision cures well in 5 to 7 days.

  • Following chin augmentation surgery, a facial support garment is installed at the end of surgery to help control swelling and reduce movement after surgery. It should be worn 24 hours a day during the first week.

  • Chin increase Surgery usually takes about 1 hour to complete depending on the complexity of the surgery.

Recovery time

Mild pain/discomfort is expected over three to five days. Patients can return to normal daily activities after 1 week, but avoid strenuous exercises/activities for 6 weeks, including contact sports.

What to expect after surgery

All surgical procedures always involve the risks of surgery. But complications are rare. Bruises can occur and can take 2 weeks to resolve, whereas major bleeding is rare. Infection is uncommon (below 0.5%) and requires appropriate antibiotic treatment. The implant may be displaced at the beginning of the post-operative cycle. It is avoided by avoiding pressure on the chin, by sleeping, by massaging the face or by moving excessively. Some discomfort around the chin and lower lip is expected and will generally return to normal between 6 and 12 weeks after surgery.
